Last weekend, the Pigs traveled to Faribault for the 7th annual Food and Drink at the Maul 10s Tournament. Although the active Pig turnout was fairly light, we had strong contributions from some new guys and some temporary help from others throughout the day.
Our day started against The Black sheep, a high school/Bethel combined squad. The opposing team got on the board first as the Pigs learned how to play together. However, the Pigs soon turned it around and through hard running and ball control dominated the rest of the game and won with a fairly wide margin, although the final scored is unknown. Tries were scored by a multitude of Pigs, including new guys Max, Prancer, and Coach.
The second game was against the rather large and experience Ludicrous team, made up of metropolis forwards. At first, Ludicrous was able to run at and through our team, which was comprised of some college kids and a large number of backs. However, after some successful goal line stands and some lucky bounces, the Pigs got right back in it with a couple of tries of their own. In the end, the opposition’s size and experience proved too much, as the Pigs went down, but the final score of 34-26 was a good sign that things were starting to gel for the Pigs.
Our third and final game was for third place against the host team Faribault Boksprings. The Pigs came out fired up and ready to go, and got on the board early. The Boks maintained good ball control and solid support, and were able to move the ball bit by bit down the field for a few tries. However, solid defense and opportune poaching minimized any damage from the oppositions attack, and a good combination of power and speed (as well as Bauer running crazy in the backline) led to a solid Pigs’ victory, although the final scores is unknown.
The results of the day are a 2-1 record and a new trophy to put up at Joe and Stan’s. Overall, a very successful day for the Pigs considering we went down with only 6 current members of the team (including Lynch) and had to play as a team on the fly. Also, we had no subs for the first two games, which considering the amount of running and the heat, was very impressive. Big thanks to new guys Max, Coach, and Prancer for coming out and lending a hand. Also thanks to Derrick, who played for us in his first rugby action ever after coming down with the St. Cloud guys, and the UWRF for their support and play in our final game vs. Faribault.
Our next action is 7/11 in Des Moines. Stay posted for more details.
We are practicing once a week for the summer - Thursdays at 6:30 at Como Park.
The next summer event for the Pigs will be the Des Moines 7s on Saturday, July 11th.
We have received our Fall Schedule of league matches from the union. Always subject to change of course, but this should basically be what's happening.
This year, 2009, is the Pigs' 35th anniversary. There will be celebrations of this momentous occasion throughout the year - here are some of the things that are planned so far:
- The annual Pig Roast was held this year on Saturday, May 2nd at the Group Home.
- We are going to plan an Above the Waist Formal on Saturday, August 8th at Stevine Mafi's House.
- We are going to have a banquet on Saturday, August 22nd. Please let Dan Corley know if you will be attending so the logistics can be worked out.
- That same weekend (8/22), if there is interest we may also plan a Golf Tournament on the Friday or Saturday, and if we get enough Old Boys, may also do a get together on the Friday night for Cocktails
- We are also going have a 35th Anniversary Jersery for sale. We are also looking at putting the Years that you played for the club on the Crest or sleeve.
Please contact Dan (BGD) Corley for more details on the events, or if anyone has any ideas to make this 35th anniversary celebration a bigger success.
Thanks to everyone for participating in the Grand Old Day parade this year. It was a great success. Special thanks to the guys who got up early (Kitt and Erin, Joe, and Seth) to help set up the tent and thanks to the guys who helped pull the tent down early. Final thanks to Nate the Bad for allowing us to jump all over his car in the parade, and to Grant for organizing the whole operation.
On Saturday, April 11, over 30 St. Paul RFC members and supporters attended the St. Paul Spring Parks Clean-Up. The Pigs spent the morning picking up trash around the Como Park area, enjoying the weather, and bonding with teammates. Thanks to all who attended the event!
